Seasonal Juice: Ugly & Awesome, A Juice On A Mission To Cut Food Waste

Mar 28, 2017 @ Project Juice

Our newest seasonal juice blend comes straight from the heart! Aptly named “Ugly & Awesome,” this juice makes use of the delicious, if unconventionally beautiful, ugly produce that would normally go to waste on a farm.

Grocery stores have very strict cosmetic guidelines when it comes to produce (ever notice how perfect all of those carrots and apples look?), meaning 1 in 5 of the fruits and vegetables farmers grow are thrown away for looking less-than-ideal.

Hear from Full Harvest’s CEO on how they are contributing to the embrace ugly produce movement.

In an effort to cut down on food waste and promote the consumption of these superbly nutritious plant foods, we’ve thrown them all into a delicious, organic and antioxidant-rich juice blend.

Read on for more on each specifically chosen “ugly” ingredient!

Bok Choy

A traditional ingredient in Asian cuisine for thousands of years, Bok Choy has one of the highest ratios of nutrients per calorie of any vegetable. This cruciferous vegetable is a cousin of broccoli and carries the same rich anti-inflammatory benefits and heart-healthy fiber.

Bok Choy is a wonderful source of vitamins A and C which are vital for eye health and immune function. With it’s mild flavor and high antioxidant content, sip your way to cancer-fighting wellness!

Strawberry

We all know strawberries as the gloriously sweet and juicy red fruits we wait until spring to chow down on, but these delicious morsels are also packed with nutrition! Like most berries, strawberries are loaded with anti-aging antioxidants that lower the risk of cancer and heart disease.

Add strawberries to your homemade salad for a burst of spring flavor.

Strawberries contain flavonoids that may help with brain health including improved brain cognition and decreased memory loss. As an impressive source of vitamin C and the mineral manganese, strawberries provide a kick of nutrition with their eternally-loved juicy taste!

Green Apple

Green apples are a popular standby in most diets and for good reason – they contain a fairly low amount of sugar while providing high amount of phytonutrients and antioxidants to reduce the risk of chronic illness. Apples contain high amounts of free phenolic compounds that help improve insulin sensitivity, meaning they help in the prevention of diabetes and obesity.

These tart fruits are an impressive natural source of the mineral boron, which helps improve bone density and the prevention of osteoporosis. Surprisingly, green apples are also a natural asthma remedy!

Cucumber

One of our favorite juice additions, cucumber provides hydration and a bang of vitamin E for glowing skin, hair, and nails! With it’s 95% water content, this fruit helps to detoxify the body and improve digestion. Cucumbers are also known for their impressive antioxidant content and ability to fight free radicals, meaning gorgeous, younger insides and outsides!

Ginger

This powerful root native to Asia has been used for centuries to promote digestion and fend off nausea. With a zingy, recognizable taste, ginger is a powerful antimicrobial and antiseptic which helps fend off illness and supports the immune system.

Recent studies have shown that consuming ginger has been found to reduce pain from inflammation as well as a painkiller. Ginger has a high prebiotic content, meaning it promotes the growth of healthy bacteria in your gut leaving you with healthier overall digestion!

Coconut Water

The ultimate boost to this juice blend is the hydrating, young coconut water. Because of its massive electrolyte content, coconut water helps replenish potassium, calcium, magnesium, and sodium that is lost through sweat after a workout or when you’re sick.

These minerals help keep your muscles healthy along with maintaining a proper fluid and pH balance. Consider this your new post-workout buddy!
