Energizing Pre-Workout Smoothie

May 24, 2018 @ Project Juice

If you’ve ever attended a group X class without eating beforehand – and found yourself needing to hide in the back row so no one sees that you’re ready to die after the “warm-up”, then you know how important good pre-workout nutrition is to giving your best in class!

We’ve all been the yogi that’s dreaming of savasana during the opening flow, the slow-poke who has their treadmill on a 5.0 during the “sprint” at Barry’s, or the gal in the Bar Method class who is ready to call it after the first arm series. Here’s an easy pre-workout smoothie solution to get your body energized into high gear for a sweat session you’ll feel proud about!

The key before a workout is fueling your body with a sustained source of energy… And the best foods for that are quality carbs with a small amount of good fat.

In this ultimate Energizing Pre-Workout Smoothie, we’ve added green apple as a low-sugar carbohydrate that contains the antioxidant quercetin – a compound that works to help fill the lungs with more oxygen, meaning more endurance to get you through a longer workout!

Other key ingredients include the avocado (containing fiber and healthy fats) to keep you full and energetic throughout your activity, while the added spinach lends your body vitamins and minerals that will help with proper muscle and cell repair.

The “ultimate” source of energy in this smoothie is from the green tea. Green tea is loaded with antioxidants that fight cell damage and provides a smoother, more focused energy boost than coffee. The lemon enhances the antioxidant effects of the green tea and spinach, while having an alkalizing effect on the body and balancing the taste of the greens.

For a superfood smoothie booster, add spirulina which provides easily digestible protein, B vitamins, omega 3 & 6 EFA’s, and minerals. Spirulina (a blue-green algae) contains natural anti-inflammatory properties and has been shown to boost muscle endurance!

Serves: 1

  • 2 handfuls spinach
  • 1 c. chilled green tea (or water)
  • 1 green apple
  • ¼ avocado, pitted
  • 2 tbs. lemon juice
  • 6-10 drops liquid stevia, to taste (optional)
  • 1 tsp. spirulina (optional)

Blend the spinach and green tea (or water).

Add remaining ingredients and blend until smooth.

Add stevia to taste, pour into a glass, and enjoy!
